I attended2 panel discussions: The Politics of Motherhood and Whatever Happened to the Women'sMovement? This event was taped by CSPAN and will be aired - in its entirety - on CSPAN2aka BookTV (www.booktv.org). BookTV is aired on the weekends only. I'll keep an eyeout for this airing (CSPAN re-runs these segments for many years). Let's just say that at this event, they must have been stunned by the questionsasked (they only allowed 10 minutes for Q&A which translated into 3 audience members,with yours truly being the first). As was pointed out by the radically feministaudience, the first 2 speakers at each mic were men. I pointed out that the women's movement has gone beyond success and was now givingwomen special rights and privileges that no man has, while reducing women'sresponsibilities (my thinly veiled Warren Farrell reference). The woman behind me whofirst called me a "pig," now shouted out "asshole!" I was delighted to evoke such aresponse. Watch CSPAN for the reaction. The next gentlemen asked the panel why they let Clinton get away with hisshenanigans and not one spoke out against him. This cranked up the audience even more. Then, just when you thought it was safe (because they were asking a woman aquestion)...this woman with a thick foreign accent pointed out that the panel was from a"different generation," and asked why they were so angry and why they weren't happy withthe achievements made by women's liberation (what I call, Dealing with Dinosaurs). You'll want to fire up your VCR's for this event! What I learned: Ann Crittenden is in NO WAY whatsoever related to DanielleCrittenden biologically or ideologically!!! She was the author of a conservativesounding book (something like "The Price of Motherhood"), but it boiled down to 1) ifyou have children, you're going to lose a lot of money ($1M for a college aged woman)and 2)society or men "expect women to do their job for nothing." Since when is gettingfree housing, free meals, free transportation and entertainment, being able to hire ababy-sitter or use day care and being able to spend a lot of money that you didn'tearn - considered a bad deal? Crittenden was also spouting what sounds like modified (read: revisionist) LenoreWeitzman statistics on women of divorce (now saying that both men's and women's Std ofLiving decrease, but men's only decreases 6% while women's declines 38%). I mentioned Weitzman's flawed stats to her and asked her "If divorce was sodevastating to women, why do they overwhelmingly initiate divorce? Why aren't womencalling for the immediate repeal of no-fault divorce laws?" She became very defensiveand said she "wasn't going to debate with me." Stanford Prof and Sexual Harassment Czar Loraine T. Zappert asked "What do we dountil equality arrives?" and "How do you compete in a man's world?" How 'bout the sameway millions of other men and women do - be good at your job! A woman from the audience was full of feminists myths, lies and propaganda. Sheasked the panelists if they were aware of "a massive men's movement taking children awayfrom their mothers." I wanted to get the name of this "massive men's movement" so Icould join :-) She said men are doing this just for the money - so they don't have topay child support. Of course, she never mentioned that this is exactly why women fightfor custody. She claimed all male judges were "sympathetic to men" and had a secretplot to help men. Apparently she's not aware of the fact that less than 10% of men getcustody of their children. Bottom Line Some feminists mentioned the fact that more girls are doing better in schools (andgraduating) than boys, but they fell far short of Christina Hoff Sommers' War AgainstBoys analysis. If you want to see a group of people that have bitten the feminist lies hook, lineand sinker, go to your local college or university and attend a seminar like this. A young single girl has a huge financial incentive nowto have a baby. As long as she knows who the father is she can have a nice littlemonthly income. In addition to having the baby that she wants. These teenage girls live at home and have a support network for child care(ie..family, relatives,etc.) The young man in thiscase is put in a financial bind where he has to work and go to school which leaves himvery little time for the child. Also, sometimes mom and dad don't like the young man who"got my daughter pregnant" so they minimize his contact with the child.
