I'mjust appalled! Every day we hear and see bulletins that a woman is beatenevery 12 seconds, and that one out of four women in the United Stateswill be assaulted by a domestic partner in her lifetime. Enter VAWA (ViolenceAgainst Women Act), you know that law former President Clinton signed in1994 as part of the National Crime Act to *clean-up* domestic violenceperpetrated by men. But, what about men? It is clear from the research studies conducted byDr. Murray Straus (arguably the foremost scientist in the world regardingviolence-related issues) at the Family Research Laboratory in Durham, NewHampshire, that men are abused as much as women. In fact, the same researchStraus used to acquire his findings that assaults against men were falselyreported in decreased numbers, the CTS (Conflict Tactics Scales-Straus, etal, 1996) became a psychometric instrument for men to prove their innocenceof being wrongly accused of assault by women, the CTS-2. Not unexpectedly, Tjaden and Thoennes, in their 1997 study, the NVAW(National Violence Against Women) report, found that male assaults were threetimes as prevalent as female assaults. Their study refuted Straus that mensuffered abuses equal to that of women. Consistent with the provisionsoutlined in the VAWA, the NVAW study asked its respondents to answer to'threats of violence,' and 'fear factors.' The answers to the same falselyelevated the 'rates of violence perpetrated by men against women.' Unfortunately, men are macho. Unfortunately, men are not listened to. And,unfortunately, men are just supposed to take it. When one combines theaforesaid 'unfortunatelys,' it becomes a lethal prescription for disaster.Abuse against men is not a taboo because, according to the system, it happensvery infrequently. Understandably, men are told to check out, or go home, ifthey visit their friendly hospital emergency room, or police station. But, there is help! Abused men must document their abuses. Take copiousnotes and keep a timeline (journal or chronology of events). They should havetheir doctor photograph and examine their physical injuries. They shouldalways file a police report of their sustained injuries. If involved indivorce, visitation, or custody litigation, they should always provide theirattorney with a notarized affidavit of their injuries. And, their attorneysshould attempt to impeach their assailant's credibility via depositions,propounded interrogatories, and requests for admissions.
